SANITARIUM FOR HEBREW CHILDREN HOSPITAL
A/K/A
CONVALESCENT HOME FOR HEBREW CHILDREN

The Sanitarium for Hebrew Children Hospital in Rockaway Park was dedicated in 1906. This photograph is being posted in hopes there are others who are seeking information.

Convalescent Home for Hebrew Children located in Manhattan and Far Rockaway. Originally the Sanitarium for Hebrew Children. Anyone with any memories or knowledge of this home for handicapped children please contact me. My father, Jack Schraga, was a resident there 1925-1928.

Arlene Dunkum email: adunkum@adelphia.net

The following information submitted by Arlene Dunkum, came from Queens County Historian, Mr. Vincent Seyfried who found this information in a newspaper article in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, dated July 23, 1906.

Excerpts from article: "Hospital Dedicated at Rockaway Park", It is a part of the Sanatorium for Hebrew Children---Exercises Were Impressive---Jacob H. Schiff, Acting Mayor McGowan and Controller Metz Among the Speakers.

"With appropriate exercises, attended by a large gathering of people from Manhattan, Arverne and the Rockaways, the new hospital built in connection with the sanitarium for Hebrew Children at Rockaway Park, was dedicated yesterday afternoon. Acting mayor Patrick f. McGowan, Controller Herman A. Metz and Jacob H. Schiff were among those who made addresses; and the band from the Hebrew Orphan Asylum in Manhattan was present and rendered a number of selections during the afternoon. The exercises were held in the large open pavilion on the ocean front and commenced at 3:30 o'clock, although for an hour or two before that time a large crowd had inspected the institution....................."

............At the door stood 5 year old Sarah Starkoff, an inmate of the Hebrew Benevolent and Orphan Asylum of New York, who made a neat little speech; which brought tears to the eyes of many present, and then turned the keys of the new hospital over to Mr. Schiff.

This home has been traced to it's present owner, the Blythedale Children's Hospital in Valhalla, NY. The Sanitarium for Hebrew Children changed its name to the Convalescent Home for Hebrew Children by certificate filed in the office of the Secretary of State for New York on June 17, 1921. This is a documented part of their history.

In the 1929 publication "Activities of Federation and Affiliated Societies" published by the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies of New York City, the following agency was listed in Rockaway. Convalescent Home for Hebrew Children was founded in 1870, incorporated 1879 in Rockaway Park.

"Combines three phases of convalescent care, crippled, undernourished, and fresh air. The home offers the best medical experts, graduate nurses, public school teachers, recreational teacher, counselors, physiotherapist, ocean bathing, Girls' Arts and Crafts Club, office routine, plain sewing, music appreciation, Boys' Band, Radio Construction. Menus well planned, so that the food is nourishing an appetizing. Age requirement, girls, 6 to 12 years, boys, 6 to 10 years. Capacity 111 in winter, 225 in summer."

Home Kids, The Story of St. Agatha Home for Children
by Nancy Canfield

(From the Authhor): Saint Agatha Home for Children opened in Nanuet NY, in 1884, and has provided continuous care ever since. This is the story, a memoir, really, of how I came to live there, and what it was like. To that, I've added the personal stories of others who lived at St. Agatha throughout the decades, and related their memories. I share them here with you. We explore what we think happened to our families, and why they couldn't care for us. We did not always know or understand why we were sent to St. Agatha. Some kids didn't know what became of their parents, why no one else in the family could take them in, or even where they came from.

To these personal stories I've added a collection of letters, reports, newspaper accounts, deeds and photographs of the people and events as they unfolded.

Unprescedented and unbridled immigration, along with prejudice, health epidemics, and public apathy, coughed up foundling babies, left on doorsteps and in alleys. They became "street Arabs," or were sent out west on orphan trains, as an alternative to living on the streets.

In the 1700's, children who needed a home because their parents died or went to debtor's prison, were simply taken in by neighbors. When there were too many, such as after the great waves of immigration to the US, vast orphan asylums were built to house more than 1,000 children at a time. These were patterned after the successful penitentiaries. But, children came out of these institutions unfit to live in an unregimented environment, and often ended up back in institutions: in prison. Destitute children flooded the streets, were exploited, and became criminals to survive, as in Oliver Twist. The need for smaller homes to care for and teach them trades, not just warehouse them, grew continuously. Public sympathy for these children, disgust at their living conditions, and indignation at their nuisance, prompted attempts to remedy the problem.

The Sisters of Charity, like other religious groups, developed Homes to take these feral children off the streets. Their objective was to develop homes where all aspects of the children's lives were considered: education, religious training, recreation, health care, and social development. To this end, the Sisters did fundraising, planned construction, growth, and programs, while providing basic care to the youngsters, in hopes that their families could reclaim them.

As adults, former "Home Kids" as we were called, sometimes reflect on their childhoods as fortunate, because they were taken care of. Others viewed themselves as prisoners: forced to do chores, attend to excessive religious duties, and treated without warmth. The one thing they all had in common was a longing to go home; often to a home and family that no longer existed. C.S. Lewis could have been speaking of that longing when he said, "We live in the Shadowlands. The sun is always shining somewhere else, 'round a bend in the road, over the brow of the hill."

I cannot say whose perspective is right in the care of the thousands of children who have, and still come through St. Agatha's doors. I can only try to retell what happened. Some opinions have changed with the passage of time and vantage point. As the "Kids" became adults, had families of their own, watched society change, and made their own mistakes, they applied maturity, wisdom and experience to their memories. They have a different understanding of the difficulties in rearing children by the hundreds. Others are too bitter, confused, or wounded, to sort it out.

Here, middle aged "Kids" and senior citizens, who lived at St. Agatha in every decade, relive their tragedy, to share it with you. Grown men developed lumps in their throats, or chuckled at the absurdities in the telling. But we got through it together.

It can be purchased directly from the author with a $25 check (which includes postage and handling).... payable to:

St. Agatha Home Services
11438 Lucera Place
San Diego, CA 92127

It will be sent out promptly, and ALL PROFITS go to St. Agatha.

PS 28 on Fulton and Ralph Aves.
Brooklyn, NY
across street from
BROOKLYN HEBREW ORPHAN ASYLUM
(1918-1919 School Year)

PS 28 was located directly across the street from the main entrance of the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum. The above photograph was of the 4th grade class of Beatrice Hirshhorn (Blumenthal),who lived on Ralph Ave., and whose cousins, Sidney Gerber and Bernard and Jerome Gerber (twins) were residents of the BHOA at the time. The children were placed there by their widowed mother Sara. Jerome died while he was there. Beatrice's family was very friendly with 2 BHOA orphans, Lawrence and Arthur Beiderman, a freindship that lasted into adulthood.
