Deja Views of an Aging Orphan - HARD COVER
(Growing up in the Hebrew National Orphan Home)
by Sam George Arcus

Deja Views of an Aging Orphan - PAPERBACK
(Growing up in the Hebrew National Orphan Home)
by Sam George Arcus

Book Review

DEJA VIEWS OF AN AGING ORPHAN is distinctive, if not unique, in its views and experiences of still alive HNOH alumni and its use of a variety of literary styles including the memoir, the essay, news articles, poems, history, short story and letters. Many provide first-person accounts of growing up in an orphanage in the 1920s and 30s and it is this first-person recounting that breaks new ground and casts new light on the subject of child-care --of such importance to society and its social policy-making.

About the Author

The author is a 78 year old, semi-retired, MSW social worker who spent most of his professional career in institutions including camps, Jewish Community Centers and now, monitoring nursing homes. He has had many professional articles published, including his most recent, HANDBOOK FOR VOLUNTEERS IN THE LONG TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM.

The Hebrew National Orphan Home : Memories of Orphanage Life
by Ira A. Greenberg (Editor), Richard G. Safran (Editor), Sam George ArcusBook Description

Some two dozen "boys" tell of growing up in the Hebrew National Orphan Home. Though punishment was often brutal and where a few boys were victims of sexual predators, residents had many religious, recreational, educational, cultural, and athletic opportunities. Most agree that the good far outweighed the bad.

About the Author

IRA A. GREENBERG is Executive Director of the Group Hypnosis Center, Los Angeles, a clinical psychologist, and a business coach.

RICHARD G. SAFRAN is an educational consultant in New York City.

SAM GEORGE ARCUS is Coordinator, Long-Term Care Advocacy Program, Pima Council on Aging, Tucson.

Home Kids, The Story of St. Agatha Home for Children
by Nancy Canfield

(NOT ON AMAZON YET) See Below*

(From the Author): Saint Agatha Home for Children opened in Nanuet NY, in 1884, and has provided continuous care ever since. This is the story, a memoir, really, of how I came to live there, and what it was like. To that, I've added the personal stories of others who lived at St. Agatha throughout the decades, and related their memories. I share them here with you. We explore what we think happened to our families, and why they couldn't care for us. We did not always know or understand why we were sent to St. Agatha. Some kids didn't know what became of their parents, why no one else in the family could take them in, or even where they came from.

To these personal stories I've added a collection of letters, reports, newspaper accounts, deeds and photographs of the people and events as they unfolded.

Unprescedented and unbridled immigration, along with prejudice, health epidemics, and public apathy, coughed up foundling babies, left on doorsteps and in alleys. They became "street Arabs," or were sent out west on orphan trains, as an alternative to living on the streets.

In the 1700's, children who needed a home because their parents died or went to debtor's prison, were simply taken in by neighbors. When there were too many, such as after the great waves of immigration to the US, vast orphan asylums were built to house more than 1,000 children at a time. These were patterned after the successful penitentiaries. But, children came out of these institutions unfit to live in an unregimented environment, and often ended up back in institutions: in prison. Destitute children flooded the streets, were exploited, and became criminals to survive, as in Oliver Twist. The need for smaller homes to care for and teach them trades, not just warehouse them, grew continuously. Public sympathy for these children, disgust at their living conditions, and indignation at their nuisance, prompted attempts to remedy the problem.

The Sisters of Charity, like other religious groups, developed Homes to take these feral children off the streets. Their objective was to develop homes where all aspects of the children's lives were considered: education, religious training, recreation, health care, and social development. To this end, the Sisters did fundraising, planned construction, growth, and programs, while providing basic care to the youngsters, in hopes that their families could reclaim them.

As adults, former "Home Kids" as we were called, sometimes reflect on their childhoods as fortunate, because they were taken care of. Others viewed themselves as prisoners: forced to do chores, attend to excessive religious duties, and treated without warmth. The one thing they all had in common was a longing to go home; often to a home and family that no longer existed. C.S. Lewis could have been speaking of that longing when he said, "We live in the Shadowlands. The sun is always shining somewhere else, 'round a bend in the road, over the brow of the hill."

I cannot say whose perspective is right in the care of the thousands of children who have, and still come through St. Agatha's doors. I can only try to retell what happened. Some opinions have changed with the passage of time and vantage point. As the "Kids" became adults, had families of their own, watched society change, and made their own mistakes, they applied maturity, wisdom and experience to their memories. They have a different understanding of the difficulties in rearing children by the hundreds. Others are too bitter, confused, or wounded, to sort it out.

Here, middle aged "Kids" and senior citizens, who lived at St. Agatha in every decade, relive their tragedy, to share it with you. Grown men developed lumps in their throats, or chuckled at the absurdities in the telling. But we got through it together.

*It will be on Amazon per the publisher, but right now, it can be purchased directly from the author with a $25 check (which includes postage and handling).... payable to:

St. Agatha Home Services
11438 Lucera Place
San Diego, CA 92127

It will be sent out promptly, and ALL PROFITS go to St. Agatha.

Journeys (A Sequel To Deja Views of An Aging Orphan)
by Sam George Arcus

All of the stories in this volume are "free-standing" short stories, but stories I through VIII can be regarded as "sequels" to the author's previous work, DEJA VIEWS OF AN AGING ORPHAN, since they pick up on many characters and themes first introduced in that book and deal with the trials and tribulations of the Arcus/Erkes family, both in the "old Country" and in America. The central plot and theme involving Nochem, Bashya and her children, Nochem's sister Sonia, Mollie and her children is told from various perspectives and points of view-not unlike the famous Japanese story Rashomahn. The remaining stories are rooted in the United States, albeit in different cities as the author and his growing family move from one community to another as he climbs the ladder of greater responsibilities and financial reward within the Jewish Community Center field.

While all of the stories are based on actual events and real people, some fiction was required to fill gaps and round out the stories. In any event, each story can be perceived as a "Journey"---actual or figurative---with some of the "Journeys" providing some rare insights into the eleemosynary world of community centers and capital fund-raising.

Karpstein Was Hiding: Pieces of a Life
by Martin A. David

Book Review

"KARPSTEIN WAS HIDING is one of the great, dark, mythical journeys of our time: The pain of a people written across the soul of a man. Martin A. David has created a haunting fusion of modern Magic Realism and the detailed story telling of ancient Jewish Mysticism."

About the Author

Martin A. David has published a wide variety of non-fiction including THE DANCER'S AUDITION BOOK (Sterling - NY, London) and hundreds of articles for publications such as the Los Angeles Times. His short stories and poetry appear in magazines and electronically. Karpstein Was Hiding is his first published novel.

KOLA: Episodes in the Life of a Siberian Husky

by Sam George Arcus (Paperback)

Based on real life experiences of a young college student and her husky--some of which have been fictionally expanded--leading up to the dog being banned from the community on pain of death for the dog.

At first the episodes are not serious but they escalate in..geometric proportions as girl and dog test each other. The killing of the German shepherd brings the politicians of Hadley and Amherst into the picture..with Kola being found "Guilty!"

SAM GEORGE ARCUS: is Coordinator, Long-Term Care Advocacy Program, Pima Council on Aging, Tucson and a former executive director of the Tucson Jewish Community Center. His other books include:

"Deja Views of an Aging Orphan" , "Journeys: Sequel to Deja Views of an Aging Orphan", "The Hebrew National Orphan Home, Memories of Orphanage Life"

Four Hundred Brothers and Sisters
and
400 Brothers and Sisters: Their Story Continues

by Judy Gordon

In 2002, Judy Gordon published Four Hundred Brother and Sisters: The Story of Two Jewish Orphanages in Montreal, Quebec, 1909-1942. Last year, a sequel 400 Brothers and Sisters: Their Story Continues was released.
(All royalties go to Montreal's Jewish Family Services)

By Mike Cohen, Tribune Correspondent....(excerpts follow:)

MONTREAL For the last number of years Judy Gordon has been on a mission of sorts. The Toronto resident's two books Four Hundred Brothers And Sisters: The Story of Two Jewish Orphanages in Montreal (1909 1942) and Four Hundred Brothers and Sisters Their Story Continues offer a rare glimpse into what was once a very well-kept secret.

Judy Gordon first learned about the two Jewish orphanages in1982 when she met and married Myer Gordon, one of the former residents of the home on Jeanne Mance Street, and later when she met many of the former orphans at various reunions. The books offer a look into the hearts and minds of the alumni and those who cared for them in Jewish orphanages not only in Montreal, but also in Toronto and Winnipeg.

The Montreal community is now learning about these two vital institutions, which provided loving care for poor and immigrant children, considered orphans of that time even though many had one, or even two, parents!

The volunteers and board members of the Montreal Hebrew Orphans' Home were the 'uptowners,' the Jewish artistocracy, about 40 families established, anglicized and living mainly in Westmount. The original home was on Evans Avenue; in 1921, it moved to occupy the former Hervey Institute on Claremont Avenue. By 1917, it became the mandate of The Federation of Jewish Philanthropies and The Baron de Hirsch Institute to continue to care for these children. Leading citizens from among the 'downtowners' saw the need for a second facility and purchased a former church at 4650 Jeanne Mance, soon to be called the Montefiore Hebrew Orphans' Home.

The books contain the homes' history, fascinating anecdotes by surviving alumni and families of the homes' volunteers, biographies of coping, and wonderful photographs of the times such as the children's strike at Aberdeen School due to a teacher's antisemitic remark; Passover 1916 illustrating not only the continuing religious education at the Westmount home but also the loving care of staff; community participation in fundraising and celebrations in the Montefiore Orphanage; the 'luxury' of summer camps and the tragic fire in 1922 at the Montreal home's Sunshine Camp in Shawbridge.

"The alumni are now mainly in their late 80s and 90s, many sick or dying," says Judy Gordon, who, like her husband, is a past president of the B'nai Brith Canada Upper Canada Lodge in Toronto. "The time has come to wrap up their stories and let them enjoy their good memories.

The Century, by Peter Jennings, Todd Brewster

The New York Times Book Review, David Walton
With so much to browse and relive, there will be something here for everyone.

A reader from Amarillo,Texas, December 5, 1998: Something for life !! A wonderful book, something you should keep with your collection. A reference for generations to come.

A reader from Old Bridge, NJ , November 28, 1998: You are there! This is a coffee table book that should not be left to sit on the coffee table. Once you get started, it is very hard to put it down and walk away. This book is so well done, that you do not have to be a "history buff" to get into it.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Genealogy, by Christine Rose and Kay German Ingalls

Reviews:"The manner of presentation is both light and thorough...well written so as to be complete, yet simple enough to be easily followed. Professional genealogists, both, the authors have done a masterful job of sharing their knowledge without talking over the readers' heads..." The Connecticut Nutmegger, September 1998
"Rose and Ingalls have covered just about every aspect of genealogical research, stressing the right way of doing things...[it is] a terrific beginner's book, written in an easy-to-read friendly conversational manner, without talking down to the reader..." Federation of Genealogical Societies Forum, Summer 1998
"This excellent book is perfect for beginners..." Myra Gormley's "Missing Links: A Weekly newsletter for Genealogists," 20 March 1998

A Dictionary of Jewish Names and Their History, by Benzion C. Kaganoff

Reviews - Reference Editor's Recommended Book: Researching the derivations of Jewish names is a complicated task, and one that Benzion Kaganoff takes on with admirable results. He delves into the roots of names from Aaron (and its derivatives Agronsky, Arkin, and Orlik) to Zwirn (German for thread), finding biblical, occupational, and regional origins for nearly 4,000 names. Because Jewish names have been adapted and modified so often over the years, it's all the more a triumph that Kaganoff has traced the history of so many common Jewish names and their offshoots.
From Generation to Generation: How to Trace Your Jewish Genealogy and Family History, by Arthur Kurzweil

Midwest Book Review: This is the only definitive guide to Jewish genealogical research, providing clear information on gathering details on family history from both family papers and memories and official records around the world. Jewish Bialystok And Surroundings in Eastern Poland
, by Tomasz Wisniewski, David Elliott (Editor), Ellen Elliott (Editor)

Customer Review London, UK , October 7, 1998: Bought this book to help search for family from Narewka. I wrote a longer review for the Narewka mailing list I run, if you want to join send a blank message to narewka-subscribe@j-geek.org. Finally this Shabbat we received the long awaited Bialystock book (Jewish Bialystok and Surroundings in Eastern Poland, by Tomasz Wisniewksi), I spent one afternoon on Succot reading it. The book was small only 147 pages and I was able to read half of it in one afternoon. It is well written and provides a good insight into how people must have lived in the region. It also inspired my father and I to want to visit the area, perhaps in the next year. The 'chapter' on Narewka was brief, about three pages.

Jewish Roots in Poland: Pages from the Past and Archival Inventories,
by Miriam Weiner, Polish State Archives, Michael Berenbaum

Reviews- Amazon.com: Jewish Roots in Poland: Pages from the Past and Archival Inventories, by Miriam Weiner, is a big and beautiful book, in more ways than one. It is illustrated with hundreds of antique and contemporary photographs of Polish cities and towns; and the depth and scope of its genealogical resource lists will help many Jews find amazing truths about their heritage. It's estimated that upwards of 75 percent of American Jews can trace at least one grandparent to Poland as it was defined before the Nazi invasion of 1939. Their search for roots will be inestimably assisted by Weiner's guide to extant documents such as tax rolls and Jewish community records. This book makes no pretense to being a literary triumph, but its practical usefulness makes Jewish Roots in Poland a poignant tribute to the ancestors of today's Diaspora--which means it is also, effectively, an invaluable tool for charting Jewish people's future. --Michael Joseph Gross

.........Seven years in the making, "Jewish Roots in Poland" is much more than an essential aid for genealogists or-with its thorough 30-page bibliography-Holocaust scholars and historians. In a more general way, it is must reading for everyone who understands the importance of remembering the three million Polish Jews who perished in the Holocaust.

Never before has there been a book about the Jews of Poland like this one. A major monument to their memory, it is a work that belongs in every Jewish home.

The Joys of Yiddish, by Leo Calvin Rosten

Reviews - Reference Editor's Recommended Book: Leo Rosten left a great legacy of Jewish culture with his classic informal lexicon of Yiddish. Rosten defines (by synonym, anecdote, and joke) the words that have made it into common parlance (like chutzpah, schlep, and schmooze) as well as a choice collection of less integrated but equally rich vocabulary such as schmatte (a rag, i.e. what a schmatte you're wearing), chozzerai (literally "pig food," now denoting crap or junk food), and hundreds more. First published in 1968, Rosten's aptly named compendium still sings with humorous erudition.

A reader from LI, NY , June 15, 1998 : Hilarious! Great source to look up everything your parents blurted out at you as a child. Most definitions are followed by anecdotes employing the Yiddish word.
Oy....you should check it out.

My Sixteen : A Self-Help Guide to Finding Your Sixteen Great-Great Grandparents, by Robert W. Marlin

Ohio Genealogical Society: "...holds our interest...while demonstrating what records are available and how to access them." Arizona State Genealogical Society: "...especially helpful to those whose grandparents immigrated in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century....holds the reader's interest..." Friends of the National Archives: "...provides many insights into effective early genealogy research."

Etz Chiam, Newsletter of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Central Florida:"I recommend that all our members read this book. The beginner will need to study it more carefully and use it as a guide; the more advanced researcher will enjoy Robert's stories and gain some useful tips."

Sources in the United States and Canada (The Encyclopedia of Jewish Genalogy, Vol 1), by Miriam Weiner

Reviews -The publisher, Jason Aronson Inc. , April 23, 1998: The definitive guide for exploring your Jewish ancestry. The articles gathered here provide details about the genealogical resource information that exists and how to gain access to it, including libraries, archives, and communal agencies. Drawing on a variety of specialists in the field as well as on their own expertise, the editors have compiled the definitive guide for helping the Jewish family historian find source material.

Ragtime music defined the dawn of the 20th century, rising in the 1890's and fading away by 1920. It is one of the first purely American musical styles and has strong African- American influences. Originally created by professional performers in saloons and honky - tonks, 'ragtime' evolved as a style through the years as piano players began to compete with each other.

The king of 'ragtime' writers, Scott Joplin, brought 'ragtime' to its classic form. He gave the popular piano style a formal structure, which consisted of four 16 bar sections in the pattern: AA BB A CC DD. Other key composers and performers of 'ragtime' music were Herbert "Eubie" Blake, Noble Sissle, James Scott, May Aufderheide, Joseph Lamb and Sophie Tucker.

Scott Joplin, James Scott & Joseph Lamb have been given the title of "3 Fathers of American Ragtime", a title richly deserved.

Because this website's author is extremely fond of Ragtime, and because most of the historical and archival information contained on this website is from this era, I have chosen to include a selection of Ragtime CD's.

[Page Musical Selection: "Sunflower Slow Drag" 1901, Scott Joplin]
