UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS
INFORMATION
For ORPHANAGES

Institutions such as orphanages have been listed in every census since 1850. All superintendents, landlords, etc. are considered heads of their respective families with each member of the institution listed below. These institutions are listed on the microfilm in the state and county where they were enumerated.

The Name of the Orphanage and exact Address location, would be very helpful in your search.

Spelling errors may be present, due either to difficulty in reading an illegible census or enumerator's error. Always try to check the original census. Some copies are more legible than others.

This institution served New York City. I cannot give you the full range of page and line information, since I only have the page for my own cousins, all of whom were listed together; their information is found at Volume 392, E.D. 72, Sheet 9.

Just an afterthought: I realized that I have the film number for the LDS microfilm on which the census data appears for the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society. The film number is 1821276, in case that information is of any use.

Hamilton Co., OH -- ED 140.

Note: I do not know how many pages it covers, but the child I am interested in is on sheet 4A in ED 140. I think it must include staff, since the cook is on this page. Six children on the page are shown as "orphan" and the relationship column is blank for the others.
