Anyone seeking any information on any of the following Children listed below who are buried in any FREE BURIAL and/or buried by FINKLESTONE, PLEASE CONTACT:

FLORENCE MARMOR
Email: florence1933@aol.com

The FREE BURIAL IS IN DANGER!!! They want to pour earth over it and resell the graves. Further explanation is at http://www.jewishinterest.com

FINKLESTONE was the official undertaker and sexton for the United Hebrew Charities (UHC) of New York. He did all their burials for the free burial. They used land that was donated to them. They were given land in many cemeteries. The main one was in Mokom Sholom. Darech Amuno owned Mokom Sholom and donated land for graves in lieu of a monetary contribution. The UHC was also involved with the HOA (HEBREW ORPHAN ASLYUM). They were the biggest Jewish charity of the day. They are now known as the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services.

EXPLANATION Of AGES OF SOME LISTINGS
Possibly
if you had been in the HOA and requested burial in the plot you could get it. That would still make you an orphan no matter how long you lived. The definition seems to be rather loose. Many of the children had one parent. Some had two. Not all were "full" orphans.
ORPHAN GROUNDS AND SELIGMAN SOLOMON SOCIETY,
THE NEW YORK ASSOCIATION FOR JEWISH CHILDREN

There is also an Orphans Plot in Salem Fields Cemetery, located in one of the Public Grounds Plots at Salem Fields. It belonged to the HEBREW ORPHAN ASYLUM (HOA). Information in Hy Bogen's book 'The Luckiest Orphans".

A SPECIAL THANK YOU to TONI TEXTER from the SALEM FIELDS CEMETERY OFFICE who assisted greatly with gathering the information at SALEM FIELDS CEMETERY.

The STORY Of SELIGMAN SOLOMON

SELIGMAN SOLOMON
OBELISK - BORN 10/12/1822 - DIED 02/13/1885

Death cert #518557, died 02/13/1885 at Bloomingdale Asylum, Boulevard (W {?}) and 117th St., New York, N.Y. of acute melancholia, exhaustion from persistent refusal of food and sories (?) alinentation (?) for 10 weeks and irrelative diarrhea, age 62 years, born Germany, New York 45 years, single, occupation retired merchant, residence 225 E. 52nd St., New York, N.Y., father Solomon Solomon, mother Sophia Solomon, both parents born Germany, buried 02/16/1885, undertaker S. Kakeles, 243 E. 49th St., New York, N.Y.

***********************

The following is from the book THE LUCKIEST ORPHANS, A HISTORY OF THE HEBREW ORPHAN ASYLUM by Hyman Bogen, copyright 1992 by Hyman Bogen, published by University of Illinois Press, Urbana and Chicago, Illinois, p. 141

"There was no one like him connected with any other orphanage in America. For more than 2 decades after the HOA opened in 1860 he was a daily visitor there and devoted more time and effort on behalf of the children than any other person concerned with their welfare. What motivated him to do it is not known but one reason may have been the extreme poverty into which he himself was born in a little town in Germany in 1822. In the early 1840's, he immigrated to the United States and settled in New York. After a slow start in the dry goods business, Solomon switched to real estate and made a huge fortune almost overnight.

He was a friend of Meyer Stern, a member of the Society, who persuaded Solomon to join. Indeed, Solomon did much more: he retired from business and devoted the rest of his life to charity, though, he was only 38 years old at the time. Every day he turned up at HOA and did everything he could for the children. He brought them food and sweets and would often take his meals with them - a practice the administration probably didn't like but was reluctant to stop. Solomon played with the children, joked with them and consoled them when their spirits were low. Nor did he forget them when they were discharged; he found the boys work if they had none and made sure they were properly paid. He even visited boys in their home to see if they needed guidance with their personal problems. These activities suggest that Solomon was going beyond philanthropy into social work and that he can be credited with beginning the movement toward individualized care at HOA.

During his lifetime he recruited about 1000 new members into the society, a record that was never equaled. Eventually, Solomon's fortune ran out and he was reduced to the poverty into which he had been born. In the late summer of 1884, he fell sick and died the following February. His dying wish was to be buried with his beloved orphans in their plot at Salem Fields, in Queens. His death was mourned by hundreds of alumni and residents who knew him as "Papa Solomon" Seeking to honor his memory, they decided to erect a suitable monument over his grave. A monument committee was organized and collected contributions from over a thousand residents, alumni and friends. On May 9, 1886, in the presence of five hundred people, mostly alumni, and the asylum's choir of forty voices, the monument - a twenty two foot high granite obelisk - was dedicated by Dr. Barr. Jesse Seligman delivered the oration and Meyer Stern, Solomon's friend for over forty years, offered theology. The epitaph on the monument read: "A father to the orphan and humanity's noblest volunteer", and on the reverse side side was the text from Job 29:12: "Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him."

As the monument was unveiled, many in the audience wept. Some stood around it for a long time after the ceremony was over. Anyone who visits the Orphans Plot in Salem Fields today will find the monument still there in the middle of a row of thirteen headstones marking the graves of inmates. "Papa" Solomon's monument towers above the stones: he is still looking after his children.

For many alumni it alone seemed insufficient to honor Solomon's memory. In March, 1887 a group of them got together to form an alumni association they named the Seligman Solomon Society. ......"

Dr. Jacoby diagnosed it as epidemic dysentery .... Early in the third week of the epidemic five children died, including several who were about to graduate from Grammar School #43. One victim, Celia Lipschitz had been a playmate of Dr. Baar's only daughter, May. A pretty girl with curly, blonde hair, May was adored by all the girls. At the morning service after Celia's death, Baar presented a side of himself the children had rarely seen. Appearing in the synagogue with a long, gloomy face, he started the service in a tentative, halting manner. Then he lost control, broke down and wept."

Located at 1st Ave., and E 27th St., Manhattan 10016; a large municipal hospital which is under the auspices of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp; its address has been variously cited as 480 or 492 1st Ave., 415 E. 26th St., Foot of E 26th St., etc.; almost 2,000 children were born at Bellevue in 1935.

CASTLE GARDEN HOSPITAL: Between 1848 and 1890 the New York State Commissioners of Emigration (so-called) were responsible for the reception of immigrants entering New York City. The commissioners conducted medical inspections of immigrants, and they regulated port vessels, boarding houses, railroad agents, and other businesses dealing with immigrants. After 1855 the commissioners operated an immigrant reception center at Castle Garden in lower Manhattan, under contract with the Federal government. (This facility was the predecessor to Ellis Island, opened in 1892.) The published annual reports of the Commissioners of Emigration are available in the State Library [and NY Public Library, among other libraries]. However, the records of the commissioners are not in the State Archives or the National Archives, and are presumed to have been destroyed.

DEDICATION TO NEW YORK CITY ORPHANS

by Florence Marmor

These pages are dedicated to the orphans who lived in New York City and through circumstances in their lives were put into the care of one of the various orphanages in New York City.

My father and his four brothers were some of the many children who foundthemselves in an orphanage. They were placed in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum after the death of their mother in 1914. They were lucky to remain together so that they could see each other. The youngest brother went into the HOA a year after his older brothers and was sent upstate to Syracuse in the charge of foster parents who lived on farms because he had a heart condition. I have copies of the papers my grandfather filled out saying he could not care for them. He had barely worked through the time of my grandmother's illness and had not worked at all since her death.

Doing this research, I have found that my father and his brothers were extremely fortunate to have been put in the HOA as it was one of the best in the city. The care was excellent. The illness rate was low and the death rate was lower than in most institutions. I don't know how much personal care they got but I doubt if there were many hugs or any other form of affections. The four older brothers (including my father) were restrained in shows of affection. The youngest brother was very affectionate and warm. This was a marked distinction to the two oldest brothers who were here int his country. They were much more affectionate to their families and to the various nieces and nephews than the youngest five.

My father always spoke of the HOA with pride. He was very involved in the doings of the Academy Alumni Association and his friends were mainly from his days at the HOA and they were like brothers to him. I didn't know when I was a child that they weren't more uncles. After all, my father said he had 16 brothers and I only knew 7 of them including him. I didn't know at the time that 10 were in Hungary.

As a family, we were also involved with the AAA. Every year, we dressed up and went to the Passover Sedar on the second Sedar night and we sat at the table with my father's closest friends. Children were brought to the head table to Mr. Simmons to be presented. He remembered them from year to year and might not have remembered each and every name but he knew which of "his" children were the mother or father of that child. It really amazed me. I could never figure out how he could do that. These Sedars were a huge family party and everyone greeted each other warmly.

There were many wonderful people at these Sedars who I remember very well. Mostly, I remember myfather's friends and classmates. They had gone on from the HOA into many types of work. My father had a gas range accessories business; one brother became a lawyer; another had a hardware store; another became a chef and the last held many jobs including photographer and manager of a cleaning store. Some of my father's friends very diverse occupations - lawyers, owner of a dry cleaning store, owners of many different types of businesses and workers in city government, etc.

I decided to share in Marge Soloff's web page honoring orphans because I firmly believe that these orphans who were some of the most unfortunate in New York City went on to live busy and productive lives in the world after they left the HOA.They married and had children who learned about the HOA from them. Some served in the wars that our country has been involved in and some of those died in those wars. I felt that my research on Mokom Sholom Cemetery could help me to honor those orphans who had died and possibly no longer had anyone to memorialize them and maybe there was no one to visit their graves. I hadnoticed children who died while in the care of the HOA and other Jewish orphanages in the abstracts of the death certificates I was forever typing for the research I was involved in at Mokom Sholom. I could not help feeling for these poor children who had died at such early ages. I enlisted the help of my associates on the research project. I don't get around too well any more and so David Priever became my legs chasing to the Municipal Archives to abstract death certificates, going to cemeteries, and the Federal Archives and anywhere else I chose to send him. The others willingly entered the chase whenever they were asked.

Hy Bogen's book was a gold mine inthis chase as it led us to the Orphans Plot belonging to the HOA at Salem Fields. There are unbelievable stories connected to those buried there. Seligman Solomon's story is remarkable and I can well understand the love his children felt for him. I knew that there were two alumni societies and that the other was the Seligman Solomon Society but never knew anything of this wonderful man as my father was not a member of that society. I will not repeat any of the stories that have been poignantly placed on the web site. I have not been there yet myself but hope to go during the summer. I have seen photographs and have been told by David Priever and can feel the wonder of this plot.

Prior to reading Mr. Bogen's book I had never even realized there was such a plot! I had noticed that we had abstracts of death certificates showing Jacob Finkelstone as the undertaker for these children from the HOA buried at Salem Fields but had not put this together with an Orphans Plot. Jacob Finkelstone, by the way, was the undertaker for the United Hebrew Charities (UHC), which was the major Jewish philanthropic organization of the late 19th and early 20th century, and he was well known to us. He was the undertaker for ALL the burials at Mokom Sholom's free burial from 1881 to 1901. I had just assumed that these children in Salem Fields were being buried in plots donated to the UHC as there were plots all over the city in various cemeteries that had been donated to them.

It is amazing to me that my research at Mokom Sholom has given me this opportunity to further honor my father and his brothers by memorializing these children who were not given the opportunity to live to adulthood and marry and have their own children who can visit their graves and say the necessary prayers for them. Many times I find relatives of young children and babies to be told that most young children who died were not visited by their families or discussed with them. The pain is too great, I suppose. It took me several years to visit the grave of my own baby so I can understand this. I am grateful for this gift that has been placed in my hands.

Florence Marmor

By the way, my father was Abe Lesser and his brothers were Armende, Joe, Harry and Martin. Joe was the oldest of the crowd with Armende next and then Harry, my father and Martin holding up the rear. Some of my father's friends were Jack Cohen and his wife, Annie (whose maiden name I don't know but she was in the HOA), Mac Modell, Red Lipman and others whose name are at the tip of my fingers but my brain isn't giving their names to those fingers.
